Probably sometimes I get in a hurry and don't boil an egg long enough for it to get hard boiled. Are there tips to be sure the egg is hard boiled? I use an electric stove. this morning's eggs were absolutely gross: the yolks were done but the whites weren't. Yuk.
put the eggs in a cold pan of water, then bring to the boil, and time for about seven minutes. that should do it.
I love hard-boild eggs! And, precisely, Martin. I've seen people put the eggs in when the water starts boiling, and you don't want to do that. Makes the eggs crack, and turn nasty. As Martin said, put them in the water when it's cold, and start your timer for about seven minutes as soon as the water actually begins boiling. That should make sure the whole egg is done through, and the yolk will be firm. Soft-boiled eggs are disgusting! You can also put salt in the water to make it boil faster, and I've heard this helps prevent the shells from cracking, though I'm not entirely sure about that.
Or bring your water to the boil first, then put your eggs in a fairly small saucepan of water just enough to submerge the eggs and so they don't roll around and crack, then set a timer for 6 minutes. That should result in hard-boiled eggs.
Jen.
do a hole batch at once when you have a lot of time. adn when you are pelling them, do it under running water, it makes it oh so much easier. You can have eggs for weeks before they go bad, And I am shure you han have them longer if they are hard boild.
It's a matter of timing for me. I start timing from the moment I put the pan on the go though, and for me it takes about 12 to 15 minutes or so. Perhaps my burners take longer to heat up, perhaps I boil mine for longer. Whatever the case, that's what works for me.
in affect, you are boiling the water inside the eggs, making the water leach out of the egg, leaving the solids behind. so if you put cold eggs into a boiling water, you will crack them every time. best to put them in at the start, you have no danger of burning yourself then. and salt? hmm, never heard that one. but whatever.
If you run cold water over hard boiled eggs as soon as they are done, they peel amazingly easy. Usually, you can just crack the shell all over and it just slidesoff in one big piece. And, yes, salt does make water boil faster. If you want to be able to tell if an egg is hard boiled, just spin the egg on the countertop. A cooked egg spins faster than a raw one.
I love soft boiled Eggs. MMMMMM. Especially in rice.... but I usually do mine for twelve to fifteen minutes, some seventeen.
